Almost every exercise or woman’s magazine in the last 12 months has had an article on the new training buzzword of the moment, H.I.I.T. So what is H.I.I.T and why should you be interested in it? Well H.I.I.T stands for High Intensity Interval Training and its benefits in getting you fitter, helping you to lose weight and boasting your mood in a shorter time than a regular exercise regime is becoming clearer with each study that is released.
So basically High Intensity Interval training is a system where you work at your highest intensity doing a multitude of different exercises for a short period of time, anywhere from 20 seconds to a couple of minutes and then you take rest periods in between.
I first started doing HIT about a year ago. I’ve always exercised or danced a lot but being a single working mum I was finding less time to spend in the gym. I read an article about how High Intensity training can give you better benefits than hours on a treadmill at an average pace. So I started to bring it into my work out regime. And I loved it. There is nothing like the feeling of pushing yourself to your limit knowing that it is only for a short amount of time.
So what are the benefits of this type of training?
Studies have shown that it is great for your heart, helping it to get stronger.
It is a more effective form of fat burning especially on fat around your middle which we particularly have to worry about as we get older and not only burns fat just during the workout but up to 24 hours later!
It helps suppress the appetite, unlike long periods of exercise, which sometimes can make us hungrier.
You don’t need any equipment; you can do it anywhere, anytime.
It stimulates the production of HGH, human growth hormone that is not only responsible for calorific burn but helps slow down the aging process!! (I’m sold! )
I am a huge fan of Pilates and Barre and teach both but I find that with these great forms of exercise you still need some type of calorie burning exercise, which makes H.I.I.T a perfect match to your toning and strength work. I designed my Bootcamp class at Platinum Pilates in Rathmines, Dublin to incorporate H.I.I.T into a Pilates class. So in an hour we do lots of core and strength work and some high intensity intervals and finish with a great stretch! I am also working on a Barre Bootcamp class to bring interval training into a Barre class.
These sorts of classes are becoming more and more popular as we are realizing that we were made to move! Our increasing sedentary lifestyle means we spend less and less time doing what our bodies were meant for, moving around! And why run on a treadmill for hours when you can have more fun and get more out of short bursts of exercise. And it is a great for men or women!
Orla Hannon teaches at Platinum Pilates in Rathmines. Bootcamp classes are currently on Friday morning at 10.30am and Saturday at 1pm with more coming soon including Barre Bootcamp! For more information see www.platinumpilates.ie
